It's "it has been completed β and the completion stands forever."
Historians have also found this word stamped on ancient receipts and financial documents in the Roman world. When a debt was paid in full, the creditor would write tetelestai across the bill β meaning: paid in full. Nothing more owed.

What Exactly Was Finished?

Romans 6:23 says: "The wages of sin is death." Every human being owes a debt they cannot pay β the debt of sin against a holy God. No amount of good works, religious effort, or moral living can settle it. The debt is too great.

4. The Way to God Was Opened

Jesus came with a mission β to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10), to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45), to be the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). Every prophecy fulfilled. Every requirement met. Every promise kept.
It is finished was the declaration that the mission was accomplished. Completely. Perfectly. Forever.
Why "It Is Finished" Is Not the End β It's the Beginning
Here's what makes It is finished so extraordinary: Jesus didn't stay dead. Three days later, He rose. The resurrection is the proof that the cross worked β that the debt really was paid, that death really was defeated, that the mission really was accomplished.
1 Corinthians 15:17 says: "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins." But He was raised. And because He was, It is finished isn't a eulogy. It's a victory cry.
